I have never been in a position of needing an abortion on medical or just choice grounds, but I am a firm believer in ALL women everywhere having that choice. I have taught from age 11 to adult learners since 1990, my subject specialism covers child development and health care and social support systems so I am often asked really interesting hypothetical and also deeply personal questions by students. I have to repsond in an age appropriate way in line with the exam boards syllabus and the school policy, juggling this can be difficult. I have taught in faith schools where abstenance is the only acceptible form of contraception but the syllabus requires knowledge of a wider range so the Head has sat in on these factual lessons and lead the discussion from a faith persoective. I have talked to students who have found themselves in a position of needing a termination, or at least a supportive discussion about it with professionals. I could not endorse or suggest what to look for in terms of a provider. This was really hard as many of my students come from small communities where the GP went to school with their parents and everyone knows everything about everybody else. Being able to access the emergency contraceptive pill has helped students who live in towns with a pharmacy, but again many under 16's have been turned away before their real needs are understood. Many clinics need a journey to get there, and someone to take you and bring you home. Difficult on public transport and when you have to be very secretive with your closest friends. Access to family planning clinics is patchy, some will not see under 16's which is dangerous. Especially in cases of being sucked into gang behaviours, exploitation, trafficking and abuse from family members. No one should have to run the gauntlet of facing down anti abortionists on their way into or out of a clinic, and everyone should be able to have free, unbiased care when they need it, and information to allow an informed choice.
